Experience Antigua during Lent season

During Lent season in Antigua, Guatemala, vibrant processions wind through the cobblestone streets, adorned with intricate carpets made of colored sawdust, flowers and vegetables. The solemn atmosphere transforms into a spectacle of religious devotion as locals carry massive wooden floats, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ, amidst the backdrop of colonial architecture. It's truly magnificent!

During our 2024 tour, we visited a local community in a village outside of Antigua on Sunday morning. We were welcomed as we arrived by tuk-tuk to admire their temporary street carpets (also called alfombras). Families were eager to tell us about their design and even invited us to participate.

April 6, 2025 is set to be a special day in Antigua as alfombras line the streets and a processional makes its way through town. We will have the unique opportunity to see this in person!

FAQs

Q: Who is this trip for?
A: Women of any age who want to enjoy a cultural experience. Young women under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Q: What is the cost?
A: The 7-night option is $3350 per person. The 10-night option is $4200 per person.

Q: What is the sleeping situation like?
A: Prices are based on double occupancy. Some rooms have two twin beds and some rooms have a king-sized bed, so it's best to sign up with a friend or plan to upgrade to a private room. In some cases, it's possible to pair two solo travelers together and provide separate beds in a shared room. Inquire about this if interested.

Q: Is it possible to have my own room?
A: Yes. Contact us, and we will provide you with the increased price for a private room.

Q: Can TOP help with my airfare and travel insurance?
A: Absolutely! We will recommend a flight that is best from your area. And if you need help booking, we can do that. We provide travel insurance quotes through Allianz upon request.

Q: What is the volcano hike like and is it worth adding on the three days?
If you have the time and resources, definitely choose the 10-night option! There are two volcano hikes and those who stay for the additional three nights will get to choose the volcano hike that's right for them. The two options are the Pacaya hike which is a half-day moderate hike or the Acatenango hike which is an overnight adventure that is difficult (but oh so rewarding!). Both experiences will be followed by a spa day including a massage or facial at the historic Casa Santo Domingo. The added benefit to staying three more days is also more time to relax and enjoy Antigua. Being in Antigua over another weekend during Lent season will allow travelers more time to see the alfombras and processionals.

Q: I have dietary restrictions. Will I find enough to eat?
A: Yes! Every place we eat has lots of options. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free can all be accommodated.

Q: What is required to travel to Guatemala?
A: A valid passport with one blank page.

Q: Can I get a refund if I cancel?
A: If you decide to cancel within the first 30 days of signing up, you will receive a 100% refund. Following the thirty days of signing up, there will be NO refunds for cancellations, including illness. However, if unforeseen circumstances arise and Travel on Purpose must cancel the trip, you will either be refunded for the entire amount you have paid for the tour or the tour will be rescheduled for a mutually agreed upon time in 2025.
